Star Adventures in the World of Kerbals: Dnipro Students Explore Engineering and Space Through Play

On November 13, IT STEP School hosted a hands-on workshop called “Star Adventures in the World of Kerbals”, organized by Association Noosphere. During the session, students dove into the universe of Kerbal Space Program — a realistic spaceflight simulator that lets you design rockets, explore flight mechanics, and tackle engineering challenges in a playful, game-like format. It felt like a real journey to the stars — bright, educational, and inspiring. Participants learned how rockets and spacecraft are designed, why different engines produce different thrust, why rockets need multiple stages, and how mass balance affects a spacecraft’s stability and control.

This format helps connect school subjects like physics, math, and computer science with real-life engineering processes. And for students dreaming of creating their own digital products or working in the space industry, it became a first step toward understanding the profession in practice. Huge thanks to the IT STEP School team for their partnership and openness to modern educational formats — and to the students for their curiosity and courage to dream big about space.

Kerbal Space Program has been widely used as an educational STEM tool around the world for many years, since the laws of orbital mechanics and aerodynamics work almost exactly as they do in real space missions. That’s why KSP is the foundation of the Noosphere Space Games — a competition held since 2022 by Noosphere Association together with the Ukraine Spacemodelling Sports Federation.

And if you’d like to test yourself in virtual space, build your own spacecraft, and carry out a rescue mission — join the Noosphere Space Games! More than 2,500 participants have already tried their skills in virtual space over the years. You can still register for this year’s competition until November 25. Participation is free, the age category is school and university students up to 24 years old, and the prize pool is $2,200.
